Pallas’ Cat

The resident of this enclosure is a Pallas' cat named Timofei. He is a living symbol of the Moscow Zoo. He can be difficult to spot, as Pallas' cats are masters at hiding in plain sight. Even in the zoo, not everyone gets to see him, but it’s worth the effort. When he’s in a good mood and the weather is pleasant, Timofei presents himself as a gorgeous, elegant, and simply stunning cat.

When best to watch him: in the warm season, in the morning or in the afternoon, with the onset of dusk.

A Couple of Facts About Pallas' Cats

The Pallas' cat is a rare, fluffy member of the cat family native to Central Asia. Pallas' cats cannot be tamed, and even kittens born in captivity will never become fully domesticated. These wild cats are truly cute: they have long, thick, light-gray fur, with ginger in some areas, black stripes on their cheeks, and spots on their foreheads. The coloration helps them camouflage themselves against rocky cliffs and steppe landscapes. At times, Pallas' cats are impossible to spot—even when you are standing right in front of them.
The Pallas' cat’s most important preparations begin before winter. During this period, he needs to grow a very thick coat and build up plenty of fat. In autumn, not only does his appetite increase, but so does his activity. It’s a great time to admire the Pallas' cat in all his glory. Watch him on the livestream and be sure to come and visit!
