Orangutans

The Moscow Zoo is home to two families of orangutans—red, shaggy hominid apes with intelligent eyes. The first family comes from Sumatra: a shaggy, large-cheeked adult male, adult females, and energetic babies. They can even drink tea from a bottle, are very playful, and love dressing up in clothes provided by keepers. In the neighboring enclosure are orangutans from Borneo—slightly more stocky and fluffy, but equally sociable and fascinating to observe.

When best to watch them: in the morning and in the first half of the day.

A Couple of Facts About Orangutans

New Grounds, "House of Primates" exhibit, Great Apes Wing. Orangutans are arboreal apes and the most closely related primate species to humans. They inhabit islands in Indonesia and Malaysia, living in trees in rainforests where they build nests, and very rarely descend to the ground. Their diet is primarily fruit-based, but they also eat grubs and insects.
Adult orangutans lead largely solitary lives, though their children remain with mothers for several years. Females often live near one another, communicating and even helping each other. Males are typically larger, with thicker, longer fur, and develop whiskers and beards.
Orangutans are highly intelligent, quick-witted, resourceful, and prudent animals. They can use sticks as tools, fashion rain shelters, solve puzzles, and astonish us in countless ways. We invite you to witness this for yourself—via livestream or in person!
